Colombia sorts visas into three tiers: V for visitors, M for migrants, and R for residents. This guide covers the categories veterans ask us about most, checked against official sources on August 27, 2026. Where the rules say nothing about VA benefits, we say so.

> This is general information, not legal advice. Colombian immigration rules, fees, and agency instructions change, and visa decisions are discretionary. Confirm current requirements with the Cancillería and consult a licensed Colombian immigration lawyer before filing, especially if your income is VA disability compensation or you are asked for medical records.

## Before You Begin

- **Know the 2026 income benchmark.** Decreto 0159 de 2026 sets the monthly minimum wage (SMLMV) at COP 1,750,905, so 3 SMLMV is COP 5,252,715. The decree is under judicial review; recheck the figure before you file.
- **Mind document age.** Supporting documents must generally be under three months old when filed.
- **Protect your medical privacy.** The published checklists do not ask for a VA rating decision or treatment records. Submit only what Cancillería requests.
- **Keep FMP separate.** The VA Foreign Medical Program pays for qualifying care abroad; it is not health insurance and may not meet a visa's health-coverage requirement.

## The Four Paths Veterans Ask About

![Four-card grid of Colombian visa paths veterans ask about: M-Pensionado with a pension document, M-Cónyuge with two rings, M-Compañero Permanente with two figures, V-Digital Nomad with a laptop](../../../assets/images/blog/colombia-visa-options-veterans/visa-paths-grid-en.webp)

1. **M-Pensionado**: a certified lifetime pension of at least 3 SMLMV.
2. **M-Cónyuge**: marriage to a Colombian citizen.
3. **M-Compañero Permanente**: a formalized union with a Colombian partner.
4. **V-Digital Nomad**: remote work for a foreign company.

## M-Pensionado (Pension Visa)

Article 77 of Resolución 5477 requires a certificate of a monthly lifetime pension of at least 3 SMLMV from a state or private pension fund; a criminal-record certificate from the country where you lived during the past three years; a psychophysical-fitness certificate; and qualifying health coverage. The visa may be issued for up to three years, does not permit work, and counts toward an R visa after five qualifying years.

**Where VA benefits fit.** Military retired pay may fit this framework if you can obtain the lifetime-pension certification the rule requires. VA disability compensation is different: US law classifies it as compensation, not pension, and the published Colombian rule does not expressly recognize it. A Permanent and Total rating does not change that, and a monthly amount above 3 SMLMV does not decide how Cancillería classifies the benefit.

Cancillería publishes no diagnosis-specific rule. Online reports that link denials to PTSD or other conditions come from private firms and cannot be verified. Do not choose or avoid a visa because of a diagnosis.

## Spouse and Partner Visas

**M-Cónyuge** requires a recent Colombian marriage record, your spouse's request with evidence of cohabitation, a special power of attorney, and both partners' migration records. It permits work. The compiled regulation lists three years of M status before an R application, but Cancillería's current category page says five. Verify before you plan around it.

**M-Compañero Permanente** may be issued for up to one year, permits work, and requires a union declaration formalized more than one year before filing. It takes five years of qualifying M status before an R application, and a gap between visas interrupts that time.

Report any change in the relationship promptly. Cancillería may terminate a visa early when its basis changes.

## Remote Work and the Tourist Permit

**V-Digital Nomad** requires evidence of remote work for a foreign company or qualifying independent work, three months of bank statements showing at least 3 SMLMV, and qualifying health coverage. It may be issued for up to two years and does not count toward an R visa.

**Tourist entry permit.** US citizens normally receive up to 90 days on entry, extendable to a maximum of 180 days per calendar year. Apply for the extension (PTP) five business days before the permit expires; the 2026 fee is COP 150,000. Remote work for a foreign company is allowed if no Colombian company pays you; tax and labor questions are separate. A short trip abroad does not erase days already used, and neither re-entry nor the days granted is guaranteed.

## Fees, Timing, and after Approval

Resolución 3969 de 2026 sets the ordinary fees: **$56** to study the application, then **$138** (V), **$204** (M), or **$183** (R) on approval. The regulation gives 10 calendar days to pay the issuance fee, though one instruction page says 10 business days; follow your own authorization notice.

Applications start online through [SITAC](https://tramitesmre.cancilleria.gov.co/tramites/enlinea/solicitarVisa.xhtml). Cancillería may still require originals or an appearance and may take up to 30 calendar days after a complete, paid filing, longer with interagency consultation. Filing does not extend or regularize your status.

US documents need an apostille. Federal records such as an FBI check go through the [US Department of State](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/replace-certify-docs/authenticate-your-document/requesting-authentication-services.html) ($20 per document); state records go to the issuing state. Confirm that any VA letter is eligible before you rely on it.

Most visas valid longer than three months then require a cédula de extranjería within 15 calendar days (2026 fee COP 294,000). When a visa ends, you have 30 calendar days to leave or file for a new one. A salvoconducto (COP 88,000) is a separate document and does not preserve time accumulated toward residence.

## Common Mistakes

- **Treating VA disability compensation as an accepted pension.** The published rule does not say so.
- **Planning on a border run.** Days used still count toward the 180-day ceiling.
- **Overstaying.** It can trigger an administrative proceeding, a case-specific fine, deportation, and future-entry consequences.
- **Refiling right after a denial.** A denial has no administrative appeal, requires departure within 30 calendar days, and bars a new application for six months; the next filing must be from your country of nationality or lawful permanent residence.

## When to Get Help

Consult a licensed Colombian immigration lawyer before filing if your only qualifying income is VA disability compensation, if Cancillería requests a document you do not have, or if a visa has lapsed. Confirm any fee or deadline through the Cancillería's official channels.
